[Johannes Frischknecht’s letter is significant because he has known Ngak’chang Rinpoche for almost 30 years, and acted as the translator between Rinpoche and one of his main teachers. He is not, and has never been, a student of Ngak’chang Rinpoche.]
My name is Johannes Frischknecht and I live in Switzerland. I am a student of Ganor Rinpoche. I write to say that I knew Ngakpa Chögyam almost 30 years ago when he was in Dharamsala India with Ngakpa Yeshe Dorje. I knew Ngakpa Chögyam as an extremely serious Dharma practitioner. It makes me very sad, that people attack him.
I just read a biography of Thangtong Gyelpo, who was completely enlightened – the emanation of Guru Rinpoche and Tilopa – but what did the people of Tibet do? Often he was beaten up, they threw stones on him, other tried to kill him. So Thangtong Gyelpo himself said “The half of Tibet’s population sees me as Buddha, the others as bad spirit.”
This is happening now to Ngakpa Chögyam too. As far I know, he is one of the most cooperative and honest Dharma teachers in the West. He went so far to serve western people and to teach them according their mental dispositions, fitting to the western mind. It’s a shame, that the world goes only after name and fame. Ngakpa Chögyam is such a good, loving, and honest Yogi – and it’s shameful that he has to suffer from small minded and jealous Dharma practitioners. It’s one of the great downfalls and one of the 10 nonvirtuous actions to bring splits into the Sangha. These are the jealous concepts in the minds of certain unfortunate people.
I know that Ngakpa Yeshe Dorje wrote a preface of the book Rainbow of Liberated Energy! I was there myself, when Ngakpa Yeshe Dorje gave Ngakpa Chögyam the initiation of Thöma Nagmo together with the permission and transmission to use all the Tantrik attributes, Thakdröl, Gomtag, etc. I know all this because I was the translator between them. I knew Ngakpa Chögyam in the 1970s and 1980s as the personal special student of Ngakpa Yeshe Dorje. I also knew him to be very close to Khordong Terchen Chime Rig’dzin Rinpoche because I saw them together when Khordong Terchen Chime Rig’dzin Rinpoche gave the initiations of Dorje Drollo, Senge Dongma, and Thöma Nagmo. Ngakpa Chögyam was sitting on a throne next to Khordong Terchen Chime Rig’dzin Rinpoche and helping with the initiation. I saw also the takdröl tied in his hair by his lama at that time. He had great love for Ngakpa Chögyam which was clear to all.
Ngakpa Chögyam I know is not lying, cheating, killing, or misusing women. He never smoked or used drugs unlike like many others. In the contrary – he established the rule, that personal students have to refrain from smoking before they can be personal students. I know this because sometime I translated for him at the Sebil Centre in Zurich in Switzerland. I only experienced him as extremely honest, humble and also as a very loving person, full of jokes and deep meaning inspirations, moment by moment, for me – even though he is not my teacher, he is a real master.
I know and I discussed this matter with many Lamas. If a Western become inspired, if he hears the voice of Guru Rinpoche in his mind and heart himself, all think that he is a freak. Guru Rinpoche always present everywhere and his emanations infinite. It is very unfortunate that Westerners are putting other Westerners down. It is very inauspicious!
If anyone has a guide like Ngakpa Chögyam (being nonsectarian) who shows better means of relying between teacher and student, worked as a street-cleaner just be to able to follow Dharma teachings, they should be proud. Who is there who cares so much for the Ngakpa Sangha as Ngakpa Chögyam? Nobody. I could continue and continue to praise his virtuous actions and I guarantee that he is a spontaneous realized Yogi.
